Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a monomeric glycoprotein present in human blood and a number of other types of tissue. It is a key regulator of macrophage function that can stimulate cells from many different sources to release interferon and other cytokines, or to participate in mechanisms that cause other cells to release these same proteins. It was first isolated by Schachter and Wollman in 1975.
